Copa takes steady introduction path for Embraer 190s
- Air Transport Intelligence News

Panamanian carrier Copa Airlines reports itself very satisfied with
initial performance data of its new Embraer 190 aircraft as it plans a
cautious route introduction schedule for the aircraft.
Copa, which will receive a total of 15 Embraer 190 regional jets and
holds options for an additional 15 aircraft, has already taken delivery
of its first two of the type.
Speaking during the Latin American CEO Conference in Miami, COPA chief
executive Pedro Heilbron says the carrier is pursuing a “slow route
introduction” schedule to make sure its on-time performance and
reliability does not suffer during the introductory phase.
"Currently we are using our two first Embraer aircraft eight hours per
day and they are doing a perfect job,” he says. “Gradually we will ramp
up their daily utilisation to 11 or 12 hours.”
Copa also operates 22 Boeing 737-700 and -800 aircraft, with seven more
on order. Heilbron says of the Embraer jets: “They are a perfect
complement to grow our hub structure into new, thinner markets.”

ExpressJet ERJ-145 loses left gear tires during takeoff - Air Transport
Intelligence News
An ExpressJet Embraer ERJ-145XR yesterday had to declare an emergency
after losing both tires on its left landing gear during takeoff from
Houston intercontinental airport.
Continental Express flight 3161, originally destined for Minneapolis/St
Paul, circled for about two hours to burn off fuel before landing at
18:15 without incident.
No injuries were reported among the three crew and 45 passengers.
An ExpressJet spokeswoman says damage has not been determined, although
she confirms the aircraft has been taken out of service.
Investigation teams from Embraer and tire manufacturer Goodyear are
arriving in Houston today to examine the aircraft. The US FAA also is
investigating the event.
It is unclear which specific aircraft was involved in the incident.
