Airlines, Financials & Start-Ups
SAMA, Saudi Arabia was formed by Investment Enterprises (chaired by HRH Prince Bandar) and Mango Partners, UK for mid-2006 startup of LCC services with leased 737-300s; it expects to operate fleet of six by end of 2006.
ICELANDAIR selected Trent 1000s for up to seven 787s (two firm) for delivery starting in 2010; deal includes lifetime TotalCare maintenance program from Rolls-Royce. Trent 1000s have now been selected for 87 787s.
DELTA was reportedly ordered by US Bankruptcy Court to pay $2m per month to Trustee as cushion against drop in value of 32 aircraft (MD-88/90s; 757s; 767-300s) should aircraft and engines be totally "run-out." AVITAS consulted.
GULF AIR announced 3-year plan that includes recapitalization, acquisition of new aircraft to replace nine 767s, and refurbishment of existing aircraft. It plans to reduce fleet from four aircraft types to two.
AIRBUS delivered 29 airliners (22 A320 Family; one A300F; five A330s; one A340-600) in January vs 24 (19 A320 Family; one A300F; two A330s; two A340-600s) in January 2005.

MRO & Production
BOEING began production of the 156th and final 717, for delivery to AirTran in May. AirTran took the first in 3Q99.
ROLLS-ROYCE had £347m net profit on £6.6b revenues (£3.5b civil aerospace) in 2005 vs £264m on £5.9b (£3b) in 2004; backlog grew to £22.9b from £18.9b a year ago. It delivered 881 civil aircraft engines in 2005 vs 824 in 2004.
CFM INTERNATIONAL booked orders for record 1,640 CFM56s worth $9.8b in 2005 vs 683 worth $4.1b in 2004; previous record was for 1,343 engines in 1989. It delivered 800 vs 728 in 2004 and 690 in 2003.
KAISER ALUMINUM received approval for its second amended POR and plans to exit bankruptcy by end of 1Q06.
ALOHA received Court approval for its amended POR, and plans to emerge from Chapter 11 in mid-February.
AVION GROUP, Iceland (Air Atlanta parent) purchased STAR AIRLINES, France (four A320s/two A330-200s).
WORLD AIRWAYS reached agreement with striking pilots on a new contract and resumed commercial operations.
ALPA leaders unanimously voted to ballot NORTHWEST pilots to authorize a strike should Court reject their CBA.
ADAMAIR, Indonesia has begun discussions with QANTAS regarding a strategic investment; it has seven 737s.
BOEING plans in 2Q06 to close its facility in Melbourne, AR (103 employees), and move its door and flight control repair to Salt Lake City, UT; facility opened in 1966 as part of Douglas Aircraft and became part of Boeing in 1997.
GE has 5-year, $2.5m Blue Moon Aviation, MN contract to provide CFM56-5 maintenance and overhaul for its A319CJ under OnPoint Solutions program; work is to be performed at GE's Strother Field facility, KS.
NORTHWEST voluntarily surrendered its Part 145 repair station certificate to the FAA; it can still do its own line maintenance at Minneapolis and Detroit under its Part 121 certificate. Northwest says it had no need for 145 approval as it has not performed third party maintenance in many years and outsources all of its own heavy maintenance.
GAMCO has 3-year Air Arabia contract to provide technical/maintenance support for its A320s; it now has five.
SR TECHNICS has 5-year China United Airlines contract for CFM56-7B maintenance at Zurich for up to 10 737s.
PRATT & WHITNEY and MTU launched program to develop new compressor with Integrally Bladed Rotors (IBRs), in which compressor blades are part of each compressor disk, for future narrowbody engines; testing is to start 2H06.
STELLEX, KS has Spirit AeroSystems contract to supply the Section 41 pax floor assembly for the 787.
AIRBUS began cold-weather tests on A380 at Iqaluit, Nunavut in Northern Canada, where temps fell to -29°C.
BOEING is expected by end '06 to make launch decision on 787-10X, a 6-meter stretch of 787-9 to carry 290 pax.
AIR NEW ZEALAND plans Feb. 13 to make decision on whether to outsource aircraft cleaning (122 employees) at Christchurch, Auckland and Wellington to save NZ$1.5m annually.
GLOBAL HEAVYLIFT HOLDINGS, IL is planning $1.4b private placement to fund acquisition of 10 BC-17s to establish US-based large cargo airline.
FRISBY AEROSPACE (Triumph Group), NC has $300m Saab Aerostructures contract to supply the Large Cargo Door Actuation System for 787. Saab is supplying 787 large cargo, bulk cargo and access doors (seven per ship).
FACC, Austria has $300m Goodrich contract to develop and build thrust reverser components and movable blocker doors for GEnx nacelles for A350; first delivery is planned 2Q07. It is also developing similar components for 787.
CFM INTERNATIONAL completed 63-hour flight test program on CFM56-5B/7B Tech Insertion package that incorporates technologies developed under TECH56, including improvements to high-pressure compressor, combustor, and high- and low-pressure turbines to reduce maintenance costs by 5%. FAA certification is expected in June 2006.
CONNEXION BY BOEING was selected by Air China to provide high-speed inflight connectivity for up to 15 747-400s and other long-haul models to be determined; installations are to begin in October 2006 and be completed by 2008.
B/E AEROSPACE had $84.6m net income on record $884.1m revenues in 2005 vs $22m loss on $733.5m in 2004. It says its backlog has increased 57% from a year ago to record $1.1b at end '05; bookings were $1.2b total for 2005.
ATA AIRLINES reached agreement on new contract with AMFA-represented technicians and related employees.
L-3 INTEGRATED SYSTEMS, TX completed major mods (strengthening airframe, adding second aft bulkhead, and installing 50,000 lb telescope and retractable door in area aft of wing) on ex-United 747SP for NASA SOFIA project to fly up to 45,000 ft to capture infrared images of space. Initial flight tests are to begin 2H06, depending on funding.
BOEING has Air Canada order to install its Class 3 EFB on 18 777s (starting 2007) and 14 787s (starting 2010).
VOLVO AERO had SEK836m operating profit on SEK7.5b sales in 2005 vs SEK403m on SEK6.9b in 2004.
IBERIA reached new collective bargaining agreement with its ground staff, represented by three separate unions.
AEROVISTA GULF EXPRESS, UAE plans to convert one of the four 737-200s (21973/21974/22624/ 22625) purchased from Tunisair to a freighter. ETHIOPIAN AIRLINES was selected to perform C-Check and upgrade avionics.
AIRTRAN AIRWAYS purchased pax terminal and ramp allocations at Westchester County Airport (HPN), NY.
SPICEJET, India took delivery of its first of 10 winglet-equipped 737-800s on order for delivery in 2006 (4) and 2007 (6). SpiceJet began operations in May 2005 with three 737-800s leased from GATX Air (2) and BBAM (1).
AERMACCHI, Italy delivered its 2,000th shipset of inlets and fan cowls to Goodrich Aerostructures, CA for CFM56-5B nacelles for installation on A320 Family aircraft; it expects to deliver 360 in '06. It began program in 1997.
AIA says US employment in aircraft/parts industry totaled 391,400 (202,700 production workers) at end 2005 vs 376,800 (188,600) a year ago; production workers earned $25.34 per hour (44.4 hours per week) vs $24.60 (43.6).
NASA says Boeing has purchased extensive wind tunnel time in US National Transonic Facility at Langley to test 787 high-lift system designs (flaps/slats). Boeing is now using tunnel to evaluate the final 787 high-lift configuration.
AEROXCHANGE, TX signed Malaysia Airlines for a subscription for AeroAOG, AeroBuy, AeroRepair, AeroSell and AeroSourcing products.
ROCKWELL COLLINS was authorized by its Board of Directors to buy back additional $500m of company stock; share repurchase program now totals $1.5b, of which it has to date spent $993m for 29.1m shares since Dec. 2001.
DIGECOR (Wencor) has Kenya Airways contract to supply digEplayer portable IFE units, its 23rd airline customer.
LUFTHANSA SYSTEMS successfully implemented an e-ticketing system for Garuda Indonesia.
EMBRY-RIDDLE, FL has JetBlue contract to provide training courses for its flight instructors for A320s and E190s.
AEROPLAN, Canada earned C$101.9m on C$754.8m billings in 2005 vs C$100.5m on C$692.3m in 2004.
EADS NORTH AMERICA inaugurated new regional office in Huntsville, AL, mainly to support US Army programs.
RAMCO SYSTEMS, CA released latest version of its Aviation Analytics performance management tool that provides aviation and MRO companies with daily results on operational performance, metrics and departmental KPIs.
Profit & Loss
TEMASEK HOLDINGS, Singapore acquired share of THAI AIRASIA (eight 737-300s) via its acquisition of 49.6% of SHIN CORPORATION, Thailand, which had teamed with AirAsia and private investor to form the airline in 2004.
KKR, NY sold its 29.3% stake in MTU AERO ENGINES to various investors. It had purchased company from DaimlerChrysler in 2004 for Û1.45b, then sold 64.8% in a public offering. MTU Aero Engines is expected to report earnings of >Û220m on about Û2.1b revenues for 2005 (report due out March 23) vs Û172m on Û1.9b a year ago.
BRITISH AIRWAYS had £123m net profit on £2.13b revenues in third quarter ended December 31 vs £118m on £1.96b a year ago. It had £384m profit on £6.4b revenues in April-December vs £386m on £5.9b a year ago.
RYANAIR had Û36.8m net profit on Û370.7m revenues in third quarter ended December 31 vs Û34.8m on Û291.8m a year ago; unit costs rose 3% due to fuel prices, but, excluding fuel, dropped 6% due to 737-800s replacing -200s.
JAL GROUP lost ¥11b on ¥556.9b revenues in third quarter ended Dec. 31 vs ¥3.7b loss on ¥535.8b a year ago.
AEROFLOT earned $119.6m (down 13% vs a year ago) on $1.7b revenues (up 17%) in January-September 2005.
WESTJET, Canada reported net profits of C$1m in 4Q05 (vs C$46.3m loss in 4Q04) and C$24m in 2005 (vs C$17.2m loss in 2004); revenues totaled C$367.9m in 4Q05 (vs C$273.7m) and C$1.4b in 2005 (vs C$1.1b). It replaced 13 737-200s with 737NGs during the year, and has 10 737-600s and nine 737-700s on order for delivery in 2006-2008.
SAS GROUP reported net profits of SEK198m in 4Q05 (vs SEK627m loss in 4Q04) and SEK255m in 2005 (vs SEK1.8b loss in 2004); revenues totaled SEK16.3b in 4Q05 (vs SEK14.9b) and SEK61.9b in 2005 (vs SEK58.1b). It says it saved SEK14b in 2005 from Turnaround 2005 plan, which has reduced overall unit costs by >30% since 2002.
SKYEUROPE lost Û12m on Û26.2m revenues in first quarter ended Dec. 31 vs Û12.1m loss on Û18.4m a year ago.
VUELING, Spain reported revenues of Û136m in 2005, and is projecting increase to Û260m in 2006; it began operations in July 2004. It currently operates nine A320s and plans to add seven more to fleet by the end of 2006.
BOEING has Etihad Airways contract for its Airplane Health Management (AHM) inflight diagnostic and prognostic system for five new 777-300ERs. Etihad took delivery of first aircraft on February 2 with remaining four due in 1H06.
ROCKWELL COLLINS agreed to purchase commercial/military simulation business of EVANS & SUTHERLAND, UT for $71.5m; E&S operates simulation facilities in Salt Lake City, Orlando and in the UK. Deal is to close 2Q06.
Regionals & Business Jets
BOMBARDIER plans in mid-April to restart CRJ200/Challenger 850 production, suspended since October 2005.
BOMBARDIER booked new orders from RYUKYU AIR COMMUTER for one Q300 for 2006; JAPAN AIRLINES for ninth CRJ200 (restarting production) for J-AIR for 2006; and JAPAN AIR COMMUTER for a tenth Q400 for 2007.
TRANS STATES plans in 2006 to retire its six J41s and fly all-ERJ 145 fleet (50); it is dropping American Connection service to Columbia/Joplin/Springfield, MO and Decatur/Springfield, IL, expected to be assumed by REGIONSAIR.
HORIZON AIR purchased two ex-Changan Q400s (4006/4039) from Hainan Airlines; Airstream Intl., UK arranged.
TOP AIRCRAFT, Kenya purchased ex-Horizon Air Dash 8-100 (287) in deal arranged by Meridian Jet Prop, NC.
YEMENIA J.V. purchased ex-Piedmont Dash 8-100 (327) from Bombardier for contract flying for oil companies.
ALS, Kenya purchased ex-Air Canada Jazz Dash 8-100 (179) in deal arranged by Thomas Aviation Services, DC.
PACIFIC COASTAL, Canada purchased ex-Colgan Air Beech 1900C (UC-110) from Raytheon Aircraft Credit.
AIR CANADA JAZZ leased seventh ex-Independence Air CRJ200 (7520) from GECAS; one more is planned.
EMBRY-RIDDLE, FL ordered 16 Cessna 172s with GARMIN G-1000 glass cockpit and ADS-B for mid-2006.
CLOUD PARTNERS (Triton Aviation Services/Magellan Aircraft Services joint venture) purchased two Dash 8-300s (174/182; leased to Air Canada Jazz) from Cypress Financial, CA; SkyQuest Intl., NC and HMG Aviation arranged.
ADAM AIRCRAFT, CO made first flight of first A700 AdamJet production aircraft with FJ33 engines; it plans to use three aircraft for FAA flight testing. The A700 has 65% commonality with twin-engine piston A500.
UNITED AIRLINES purchased Independence Air lease at Dulles, consisting of 35 gates for use by regional jets.
MESABA filed 1113(c) motion with US Bankruptcy Court to reject all current CBAs with ALPA, AFA and AMFA.
SKYWEST had $112m net income on $2b revenues in 2005 vs $82m on $1.2b in 2004. It acquired ASA in Sept. '05.
MAIR HOLDINGS (Mesaba/Big Sky) lost $4.5m in third quarter ended December 31 vs $1.5m profit a year ago.
AMSAFE, AZ was selected by Aircraft Manufacturing and Development to supply AAIR inflatable restraints as standard for the Zodiac 601XL S-LSA and new Alarus CH2000 aircraft; AMD is building two each per month.
AERODATA, AZ was selected by PSA Airlines (US Airways Express), OH to supply its ACARS Performance and Weight & Balance System for 49 CRJs. WestJet, AirTran, Frontier, SkyWest, Air Canada Jazz also use the system.
CIRRUS DESIGN, MN delivered 600 new aircraft in 2005 vs 553 in '04, and booked orders for 701, up 9.2% vs '04.
BALLISTIC RECOVERY SYSTEMS extended exclusive deal with Cirrus Design for airframe parachute systems.
SATCON, MA has NASA contract to develop a superconducting machine for future hybrid and/or all-electric aircraft.
BOMBARDIER AIRCRAFT SERVICES has FAA approval to eliminate skin contour tests for Learjet 31/35/36/55 in RVSM conditions, previously required every 24 months. It has 10 STCs for RVSM solutions for Learjet 30s/50s.
ROSE AIRCRAFT SERVICES, AR has EASA approval for maintenance/repair of certain regional/corporate aircraft.
ARINC was selected by Hong Kong Express to provide GLOBALink VHF data link service for four EMBRAER 170s.
BOMBARDIER has order from Italian govt. to provide 15 (now 16) Bombardier 415 upgrade kits, derived from 415MP (multipurpose aircraft) and including autopilot/nose radar (supplied by HONEYWELL), FDR (L-3), and CVR (TBA).
Traffic, Airports & Routes
KALLMAN WORLDWIDE, NJ was selected as North American representative for new Changi International Airshow, being organized to take the place of biennial Asian Aerospace show starting in February 2008.
GRUPO FERROVIAL, Spain is considering bid to acquire 100% of BAA, which operates seven UK airports.
PALM SPRINGS INTL (PSP), CA unveiled $46m expansion plan that includes constructing a new 2-gate, $24.5m intl. terminal to attract intl. charter market. PSP handled record 1.42m pax in 2005, up 3.75% from 1.37m in 2004.
LAS VEGAS MCCARRAN INTL (LAS) handled 44.3m pax (13.9m by Southwest) in 2005 vs 41.4m (13m) in 2004.
AEA members flew 54.4b RPKs in December 2005, up 7.4% vs December 2004, and 693.8b RPKs in 2005, up 6.3% vs 2004; ASKs rose 4.6% in December and 4.3% in 2005. Cargo rose 3.1% in December and 2.3% in 2005.
US DOT says 20 US airlines recorded on-time arrival rate of 77.4% in 2005 vs 78.1% in 2004. These carriers also had rate of 6.04 reports of mishandled baggage per 1,000 pax, up from 4.91 a year ago; complaints rose 17.2%.
CARGOLUX plans February 10 to begin weekly Luxembourg-Indianapolis, IN, via LAX (747-400F).
QATAR AIRWAYS plans March 26 to begin Doha-Nagpur (A320), its sixth city in India.
